Bingo is one of Britain’s best-loved and oldest pastimes, but it’s only been the last decade or so where it’s been completely transformed thanks to the rise of online and mobile play. Online Bingo
The evolution and many would say revolution of online bingo has been remarkable, to the point today where we have a bustling community enjoying a wide range of bingo games right here at Moon Bingo.
But where did it all start? And how has online bingo progressed over the years?
The 90s Changed Everything
Bingo was stuck in a bit of a rut in the early to mid-1990s. Bingo halls were seeing fewer and fewer people playing, leaving nights out at the bingo a little bit desolate.
Outside of the bingo halls, the UK was booming. Oasis were taking on Blur, we had Girl Power in the Spice Girls and the World Wide Web was literally taking the world by storm. And it was 1996 that saw the launch of the very first online bingo game.
Named Bingo Zone, it was a free play game that was shortly followed by Bingo Blitz, before uproar launched in 1998. They were almost identical to the 90-ball you’d find in bingo halls, and it was a far cry from the graphics we know and love today.
Entering the 2000s
Graphics continued to improve in the early 2000s and bingo really began to benefit from that. It helped resurrect the bingo industry as more and more variants began to develop and offerings started to expand beyond 90-ball and 75-ball. It would be the seventh year into the new millennium though that would change everything.
Saying Hello to the iPhone
2007 saw the launch of the iPhone, completely transforming how we use our mobile devices. While not the birth of the smartphone, it was the smartphone that made this type of device commonplace, and with that creating a brand new gaming industry.
The likes of casino and slots, alongside bingo really began to take off, allowing players to enjoy games anytime, anywhere.
On desktop, technology continued to improve, making bingo online more immersive than ever before. And people were taking note.
Where once you’d typically associate bingo with women of a certain age, a younger generation, both female and male were logging in and enjoying the game, with studies finding at the time the largest demographic of players being aged 25-34.
A New Dawn For Bingo
Today, it is bigger and better than ever. While the game has largely stayed the same, we’re seeing new bingo variants like slingo bingo and 52-ball bingo, as well as the game being more immersive than ever.
Functions such as chat games are allowing players to chat and communicate with each other, while the evolution is of course not done yet. With the likes of virtual reality and augmented reality on the horizon, bingo is only going to continue to progress and here at Moon Bingo we’ll be delivering you the best bingo games every step of the way.
